"You are not to make images
or idols of anything for you to worship."
Exodus 20:4-6.
GOD isn't forbidding us to draw images of His creation as such, because He Himself commanded Israel to make images of plants and animals to adorn His sanctuary. He also told Moses to create the brazen snake, and JESUS referred to it in John 3:14. Images, artwork, things, in and of themselves are not condemned, but the worshipping of them, that our Father forbids.
What does it mean to worship? GOD defines worship as "love Me and keep My commandments." Loving, serving, and obeying Him is the essence of worship; thus what we love, desire, highly esteem. seek to emulate and serve is our god.
Unfortunately, professing Christians seem little better than the secular world, because they make in their own minds an image of GOD according to their own lusts and desires, and then worship it [Romans 1:21-23]. Note what this text says in the latter part: "...Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal GOD for images made to look like mortal man..."
We, humans, have even made 'gods' out of folks in the movies, sports, and in music - even of those who sing Christian music. But we are standing on the ground of the evil one. We must not tread there.
