This commandment means exactly what it says, GOD is to be first in our lives, over everyone and everything else. When we accept JESUS as our Saviour, Redeemer, and Friend, we are adopted into His Family [Romans 8:15]; then the HOLY SPIRIT takes up residency in our hearts and minds [1 Corinthians 6:19]. All our thoughts and actions then must be governed solely by the HOLY SPIRIT. IF we have truly surrendered our will to GOD, and He is living in us and has given us new life, we will not have anyone or anything that will take precedence over Him.

Whatever we cherish that tends to take away or lessen our love for our heavenly Father, or interfere with service due Him, that is our god.
